Our Pittsburgh Constellation

March 4 - March 26

us at night bright

The City of Pittsburgh’s Office of Sustainability invites you to partake of a month of activities centered on astronomy and light pollution solutions. “Our Pittsburgh Constellation” includes a space art gallery show, talks, workshops and demonstrations. Information on the public workshops connecting visual art and space can be found on the Assemble calendar and on pghconstellation.com, the website listing events of possible interest to astronomy enthusiasts in the Pittsburgh area. A sample of the month’s activities:

  • Bead necklaces with mother-of-pearl phases of the Moon
  • Make needle felted planets
  • Learn about orbital trajectories with light photography
  • Listen to the plan for LED streetlights for a smart city
  • Talk to astronomers and artists
  • Paint nebulae and other celestial objects
  • Talk to science fiction authors about their envisioned future of space
  • Create astro-journals

Activities are subsidized by the City of Pittsburgh through the Heinz Endowments grant, “Our Astronomical Footprint,” using art to make a positive change in the world. We hope to draw attention to International Earth Hour celebrations on March 19, 2016 from 8:30 to 9:30 pm – turn off your outdoor lights to show that we are stewards of the planet. Join us in our enjoyment of the heavens and our desire to reduce light pollution.
