Assemble is excited to announce its second annual MakerDate fundraising event. On Saturday, May 18 at 6119 Penn Ave in East Liberty Assemble will host an action packed evening highlighted by the MakerDate auction. The unique event pairs local artists with skill seekers of all ages to further Assembles mission of building community through active learning.
Since its inception in 2011, Assemble has been host to a wide variety of learning and creative experiences in Pittsburgh – everything from hyper local art shows to youth coding parties. It is the organizations belief that curiosity breeds creativity, and intrigue is best satisfied through hands-on activities. In true form, the MakerDate event takes the concept of date auctioning and re-dresses it with a purposepairing skilled creators with those that want to learn something new. Attendees will have the unique chance to bid on dates with artists, craft makers, designers, innovators and skill-owners who will work with the winning bidders to make a piece of art, a personalized piece of technology, or teach a new skill. The dates will take place after the event at a time and place determined by the maker and winning bidder.
The event will feature 15 Makers for the live auction and will also include items donated by a number of local artisans, creators, and businesses for a raffle. 2012s inaugural event attracted more than 100 attendees and raised over $4,000 to fund educational programs and events at Assemble. This years event promises to be bigger and bolder, raising funds for Assembles community focused initiatives.
In addition to the live auction, the event will feature music, dancing and drinks. Makers will be announced April 22, 2013. Founder Nina Barbuto encourages everyone to Meet makers of our community. Make new friends and learn new things while you are supporting Assemble![/wpcol_4fifth_end]

“I will make a trio of Poetic Baubles with my date winner. As a poet, earning my MFA in creative writing at Chatham, I like to wear my favorite words and found others did too. Poetic Baubles are necklaces, bracelets, and earrings decoupaged with a favorite line of literature and jazzed up with beads, glitz, and gloss. Our date would consist of a decoupaging lesson, making a jewelry box for the pieces, while we decide on the perfect line(s) of poetry to put on my date’s custom jewels. I can complete the pieces on my own and deliver them the following week or meet with my date a second time so we can complete the pieces together. “
