Expired Valentines- Kids version!

February 5, 2013 @ 4:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Love it, hate it – Valentines’ Day lurks in the near future for lovers and haters alike. For children, Valentines’ Day seems buried in the commercialization of puppy love, burying innocent crushes under a mountain of chalky, unpalatable candy hearts and weighty paper cards. Adults, on the other hand, find themselves in an awkward medley of romantic pretense, sexual misunderstanding, and unrealistic expectations. With children and adults likely to experience Cupid’s presence as cause for groaning rather than glee, what’s to be done? A group of artists and performers, working out of Garfield’s Assemble’s gallery have an alternative for you!  A day of FREE activities to counteract the more icky parts of Valentine’s Day.  Come create handmade chocolates with us!  Bring a blank t-shirt or bag and make an individualized screen print!  Photobooth and fresh fruit edible sculptures for kids!  Record a valentine story in our sound booth.  Later in the evening, come “hex your ex” with interactive living voodoo dolls and have a valentine-recovery beer.  Led by Pittsburgh-based artist Anya Weitzman, the rag-tag bunch (including Harrison Apple, Sarah Ceurvorst, Alison Tan, Thom Delair, Dani Lamorte, Sam Perry, and Michael Pisano) have created a series of light-hearted, but wry activities – for children and adults alike – which relieve V-Day pressure by reviving the playfulness of the holiday. Preferring rough-and-tumble tomboys with fairy friends to Prince Charming and his helpless princess, these art-making amusements forgo standard gender paradigms for imaginative, fluid dreams of friendship, love, and camaraderie. Billed asExpired Valentines, the one-day event takes place on February 15, 2013 and is split afternoon and evening sessions for children and adults respectively.
