March 7, 2014 - March 29, 2014

New art collaborations across two, three, and four whole dimensions from Anya Weitzman, Chris Mucci, Michael Pisano, and David Lasky. Work gnawing at the margins between human and animal, beast and monster, totem and machine. Join us for light refreshments/heavy strangeness at the opening, for Weitzman’s new jewelry line launch party, or mid-month for a combo beast-themed yoga/animalian guided meditation/monster movie night (dates below).

Anya Weitzman | I hate springtime.  Pastels do not suit me.  I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes; I have to turn my head, until my darkness goes.  This, in part, is why I started Mod Evil, a jewelry line for hags, haters, and fashionable recluses (also: to reject disposable fashion in favor of high quality hand crafted goods). To craft Mod Evil’s new spring line, I’ve sapped the graphical strengths of BEAST partners Mucci and Pisano to birth a collection of brooding, yet springtime appropriate, wearables. You will not find any budding flowers here, but rather bright colors, bold prints, and brilliant Wonder Woman cuffs, for reapers, monsters, and pasty goth kids living under rocks.

Chris Mucci | Mucci’s paintings and drawings co-opt totemic/spiritual/iconic animal-based images based on intuitive attraction to shape, form, and color. Mucci also produces abstract paintings complementing the more totemic works, allowing his attractions to shape, composition and color to break from the constraints of more referential pieces, and making room for experimentation and study.

Michael Pisano | Michael is a local (Garfield!) animator, illustrator, and freaky junk fanboy. His contributions to BEAST include drawings, animation loops, and collaborative work with Mucci (gifs) & Weitzman (wearables).

David Lasky | Sometimes monsters are more accurate to reality than what David perceives with his eyes. David illustrates metaphors for the warping effects of systems of power on the humanity of individuals. He is left with sloppy chimaeras, wobbly homunculi, and slapdash hybrids. Beasts are not unnatural, but they are inhuman. It is their rightful place among us that scares David so.
