Arduino Class for Grown-Ups (Four-Class Unit)

June 20, 2015 @ 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The class runs on four Saturday nights: 5/2, 5/23, 6/6, and 6/20. Tickets pay for all four classes. Get tickets here!

The Arduino is a $20 piece of electronics that you can program to do a huge variety of interesting and useful things. Many hobbyists, students, engineers, and people just like you use them around the world for gazillions of projects, and you can join the fun! This class is aimed at educators, professionals, artists, parents, makers-of-things, and anybody who’d like to learn about how to use this inexpensive and powerful tool. Over the four sessions of this class (May 2, May 23, June 6, June 20) we will cover:

• basics: finding your way around the Arduino “pinout” and making simple circuits that work
• learning how to write code to get the Arduino to do what you want
• attaching inputs such as buttons, switches, knobs, proximity sensors, light sensors, motion detectors, compasses, and many others
• attaching outputs such as motors, lights, buzzers, speakers, and other circuits
• getting an Arduino to communicate with a computer and vice versa
• how to learn more on your own and keep moving forward when you get stuck on a technical problem
• building your own project, with help from the instructor and classmates
The class runs on four Saturday nights: 5/2, 5/23, 6/6, and 6/20. The class fee of $200 includes your own Arduino, as well as a starter kit of electronics parts, sensors, motors, etc., to take home, so each participant can build at least one project of their own. Your fee also helps Assemble keep bringing awesome programming to local youth!

About the instructor: Robert Zacharias is a new arrival in Pittsburgh who loves helping people learn new/interesting/exciting skills and tools they can use to improve their lives and the lives of others. He’s built a variety of Arduino-based projects, from a laboratory machine that slides incredibly slowly to a system to adjust the water level in a fish tank to match the local tide. See his website, rzach.me, for more info, or write bobby.zacharias@gmail.com.
